Organizational Design Software
A category of tool for modeling a company's structure — roles, reporting lines, cost, and headcount — and testing changes to it (a reorg, a cost-reduction target, an M&A integration) before committing to them in the real organization. It typically sits alongside, rather than replaces, an HRIS like Workday or SAP SuccessFactors, which handle the system-of-record data this kind of tool models and plans against.
What it should do
- Build a live model of the organization — people, roles, reporting lines, and cost together, kept current rather than exported once and left to go stale.
- Run scenarios — model structural changes and see the headcount and cost impact automatically. See scenario modeling.
- Analyze span of control and layers — surface where an organization is top-heavy or stretched too thin. See span of control.
- Support job architecture — a consistent framework of job families and levels that pay, careers, and planning can all build on. See job architecture.
- Connect to headcount and workforce planning — near-term headcount forecasting and longer-horizon strategic workforce planning, not just a static org chart. See headcount planning vs. workforce planning.
What to check before buying one
Based on what independent reviewers consistently flag about existing tools in this category, worth asking before you buy:
- Can you see pricing before a sales call? Most tools in this category are fully demo-gated, with no published pricing anywhere.
- How steep is the learning curve, really? "Not intuitive" and "learning curve" are the most repeated complaints across review sites like G2, TrustRadius, and Gartner Peer Insights for the category leader — ask to see the product used by someone who isn't a power user before you sign anything.
- Does it take workforce planning as seriously as org design? Some tools are built primarily for visualizing and redesigning structure, with workforce planning added on top — fine if that's all you need, a real gap if it isn't.
BlissPoint Organization Viewer
We're building BlissPoint Organization Viewer around exactly those three questions — public pricing, usability as a first-class requirement, and workforce planning given equal depth to org design. See how we compare to the current category leader, or browse the glossary.
